Camille Wanliss Selected Among MacDowell Fall/Winter 2022-2023 Artists-in-Residence

MacDowell has awarded Fellowships to 129 artists working in multiple disciplines who are scheduled to come to the nation’s first artist residency program for Fall/Winter 2022-2023 stays from September through February. The incoming group includes artists from nine countries and 21 U.S. states, who were chosen from 2,948 applicants, the largest pool in MacDowell’s history.

Sixty-three percent of the upcoming artists-in-residence self-identify as artists of color and almost 80 percent are first-time Fellowship awardees at MacDowell, where the mission is to nurture the arts by offering talented individuals an inspiring residential environment in which to produce enduring works of the creative imagination.

“This incoming artist cohort brings us a sense of optimism and exhilaration at a time when our world needs it,” said Executive Director Philip Himberg. “MacDowell panelists selected these remarkable innovators from the largest pool of applicants we have ever seen, a reflection of our creative community’s deep need for chosen isolation and camaraderie at this time. Across seven disciplines of artmaking, and including international artists from Europe, Africa, and South America, MacDowell aims to foster connection and creative cross-pollination – space and time in which to experiment, take risks, and tell stories that will illuminate the human heart.”

This group of MacDowell Fellows includes architect Thomas J. Campanella; composers Du Yun and Matthew Ricketts; filmmakers Maria Clara Escobar and Jasmine Lee-Jones; interdisciplinary artists Lauren Lee McCarthy and Cynthia Oliver; theatre artists Dave Malloy and Anne Washburn; visual artists Sascha Braunig and Donté K. Hayes; writers Ben Yagoda, C Pam Zhang, and Terese Svoboda; and poets Rick Barot and Samiya Bashir.

Fellows’ applications are reviewed by a panel of esteemed professionals in each discipline. These panelists make their selections based on applicants’ vision and talent as reflected by a work sample and project description.
